Color has a cost

Printing a color document on a monochrome printer often produces approximate grays — unreadable maps, confusing charts. Converting the PDF to grayscale before printing lets you see the real output and adjust it, while saving color ink on printers that have it.

Use cases

  • Economical printing — drafts, internal documents, long reports to review on paper.
  • Homogenization — assembling sources with disparate colors: grayscale makes the whole coherent.
  • Weight — on image-heavy documents, conversion can also reduce size.

Warning: it’s permanent

Conversion removes color information in the produced file — no going back. Always keep the color original alongside.

Chaining with the rest

A document bound for monochrome printing often benefits from being compressed after conversion — and a scan can first be deskewed for a clean result.
