The oversized PDF problem

Rejected attachment, a 5 MB limit on an administrative form, slow sending on a poor connection: PDF size quickly becomes blocking. Online compressors are tempting — but they require sending the document to a third party.

Local compression shrinks the file in your browser, with no upload.

What local compression actually does

  • Image resampling: embedded photos and scans are downsized and re-encoded as adjustable-quality JPEG — that’s where most of the gain comes from.
  • Redundant data removal: unused objects, duplicated streams.
  • Web optimization: linearized reorganization for progressive display (useful for PDFs served online).

Complementary strategies

  • Grayscale: converting a color scan to grayscale can sharply reduce image size.
  • Delete unneeded pages before compressing: no point optimizing pages you’ll discard.
  • Crop excessive margins to reduce the image surface to store.

Limits

  • An already-compressed PDF (low-resolution JPEG images) will gain almost nothing.
  • Lossy image compression is irreversible: keep the original.
  • Very large files (hundreds of MB) remain constrained — processing happens in browser memory.
