A PDF designed for distribution
A PDF published online has two enemies: weight (every megabyte costs download time) and perceived latency (the reader waits for the full download before seeing anything). Web optimization addresses both fronts.
Linearization: progressive display
“Fast web view” reorganizes the file’s internal structure so the reader displays the first page while the rest downloads. On a 40 MB report, it’s the difference between a long wait and a document that opens immediately.
And for weight
Linearization doesn’t slim the file by itself: to actually lighten it, compression re-encodes images and optimizes internal streams — both operations combine in the browser.
Bonus: open behavior
For distributed documents, you can also set viewer preferences — initial zoom, bookmarks panel open — so the reader lands exactly where you want.
